Setting up UTM tracking in Google Ads

Last updated 01/18/2024

A UTM tracking code is a series of URL parameters that identify the ad campaign that referred the user traffic to your site. The Bread & Butter Dashboard displays this UTM data, and lets you search and filter via these UTM parameters:

Creating Google Ads account

If you do not already have a Google Ads account, follow these steps to create one:

  1. Log in to your Gmail/Google Account.

  2. Click on the Google Services menu at the top right of the page, and select Google Ads:

  3. Click Start Now.

  4. Follow Google’s instructions for setting up your account, and creating a campaign.

How to enable UTM tracking for your Google Ads

Next, follow these steps to enable UTM parameters for a campaign:

  1. Log in to your Google Ads account:

    https://ads.google.com/

  2. Click Campaigns on the left and select the campaign you want to add UTM tracking to.

  3. Click Settings in the left menu, then Additional Settings at the bottom.

  4. Click Campaign URL Options.

  5. Set the Final URL suffix value to the following. See details below on each parameter:

    • utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaignid}&utm_term={keyword}

  6. For utm_source, we recommend setting this to ‘google’.

  7. For utm_medium, enter the type of campaign here. For example, “cpc” (cost per click), “email”, or “display”

  8. For utm_campaign, please leave it as {campaignid}. Google will automatically insert your existing campaign ID.

  9. For utm_term, please leave it as {keyword}. Google will automatically insert the keyword used in the Google search.

  10. Click Save.

  11. Repeat the above steps for any additional campaigns that you have set up in Google Ads.

You have now enabled UTM tracking for your Google Ads account and campaigns. You’ll begin to see UTM data appear in your Bread & Butter Dashboard, allowing you to search and filter on the available UTM parameters.
